final prints

Environment, visual practice

These are the final outcomes for my environment project. the theme for the final shoot was to link the clothing to the landscape the model was being photographed in. There is a contrast between the flowers/nature on the models clothing, the real life flowers/nature surrounding the model. This shoot plays on the idea of reality vs fantasy. A key element for me on this shoot was to have the models clothing baggy. I wanted the models clothing baggy because, as the wind blew it created movement within the models garments therefore getting the models clothing to interact with the outside environment. If I could change anything about this shoot I would have used more clothes, giving me more options and more links to the environment.

Final evaluation

Environment, written evaluation

During this project I have explored how environment can be  used in different ways to create an effective photographic outcome. I have taken inspiration from many photographers throughout the course of this environmental project, I have looked at photographers such as; Sally Mann, Ansel Adams and Tierney Gearson. In response to my artist research I created work using techniques that each individual photographer uses. When I researched Ansel Adams and his style of work, I travelled to the Yorkshire peaks to capture the dramatic landscapes Adams is so famous for, I then took the images to photoshop to increase things like contrast and curves so the photographs has the same dramatic and eerie feel to them.

When researching Sally Mann, I photographed environments and people that were close to me. I found this task useful because it gave me a different perspective on the people and places close to me. Tierney Gearson was the photographer whom I took most of my inspiration from. I became really inspired by her fashion photography work and especially her book ‘The Mother Project’ one of my favourite photographs from that series Gearson shot in a corn field. I am fortunate to live in a location surrounded by fields and open space so I used this element to my advantage in my final shoot for this project. Fashion photography is something I had never tried before, so I wanted to try something new for this project and incorporate it into the environment project.

My theme for my final shoot was to link the garment that the model was wearing to the outside environment the model was being photographed in. I chose a long flowy skirt with a floral pattern imprinted into the material, and a bright red flowery top which was also baggy on the model. I chose to have baggy clothing on the model because, I wanted to garments to move with the wind and therefore interacted with the outside environment. The patterns on the clothing linked to the natural surroundings the model was being photographed in. One of my favourite shots is the model sitting behind flowers, I like this concept so much because it creates a juxtaposition between reality being the real life flowers and the fantasy being the flowers on the clothing.

Overall I have really enjoyed working on this environment project. I loved the opportunity to experiment with different techniques and cameras that I have not had the chance to use before. This project has allowed me to use film for the first time an element of photography I had no prior experience with. I am happy with my final prints and think they are a reflection of how hard I have worked during the course of this project.

Hasselblad workshop

Environment, test shoots

These are the results from my Hasselblad workshop I took part in. We were asked to set up a studio, using lighting techniques and power-packs. Using a light meter I balanced the amount of light being outputted to the background and foreground of the photo set up. this was challenging because it was difficult to get the right balance between the two elements. I learnt how to connect the computer to the camera using the Focus program. I learnt a lot from this workshop and am looking forward to working with the Hasselblad again as it is such a diverse camera.

Results from final shoot on Bronica

Environment, test shoots

These are the results from my Bronica final shoot. Overall I’m happy with some of the results, others however I am not so happy with. when I developed the film it came out very damaged, I tried my best using photoshop to correct the discolouration and dirt marks on the film. My favourite Images are; 003, 004, 008 and 009. These images are my  favourite because I think the colour has come out relatively accurate compared with the the other negatives. Overall I enjoyed shooting on film and would definitely use it again.

Bronica workshop

Environment, test shoots, visual practice

These are some of the outcomes from the Bronica workshop. I really enjoyed learning and working with the Bronica because, I don’t usually work with film and I found it interesting to learn about another aspect of photography. During my time spent with the Bronica I learnt a number of skills such as; how to load film, how to work with a light meter, how to develop and scan in the negatives. I would defiantly consider working with film again especially using the Bronica. I am going to have a go at using the Bronica in my finally shoot for this unit, however I am going to shoot on digital also just in case something goes wrong with the film.
