Final Piece/Evaluation

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Moving Image Test shoots, Year 2

Over the course of this unit I was asked to create a piece of moving image work. For this unit I chose to make a music video. Music videos have always been an interest of mine so I was excited to have the opportunity to make my own. Moving image is something I have never worked with before so this was a completely new experience for me. During the course of this unit I completed a number of technical workshop, some of these workshops included; Premiere Pro, After effects, choreography, styling and green screen workshops. All of these workshops were relevant and very useful for a first time film maker like myself. I had never attempted video before so learning all of the programs such as, premiere Pro and after effects did come with challenges, but after lots of practice I am now much more confident in my editing abilities. As soon as the brief was announced I knew I wanted to make a music video. My approach to making my music video was to research artists such as, Andy Warhol and Alexander McQueen, along side music video directors who made videos for artist such as; Mystery jets, Sports Team, The Verve and Fatboy Slim.

By researching the artists and directors it gave me lots of visual inspiration for my own work. I found looking at lots of other music videos useful to my project development. The most influential piece of research I conducted was Andy Warhol’s screen tests, I knew I wanted to make a video featuring portraiture but as soon as I saw Warhol’s work I loved the idea of making work were the audience didn’t know if the images were still or moving images. I also found looking at Mystery Jet’s music video for their song, someone purer, particularly useful as I was using one of mystery jets songs for my own music video. I wanted to use a song that didn’t have an existing music video so I chose Midnights Mirror by Mystery Jets. I chose this song as I really love the overall sound of the song, also the song is not a well known song so I felt I had more creative freedom to create an original music video. I had the song in mind before I started shooting the video, I found having the audio already made it easier to create the effect I wanted for the music video.

Having the Audio beforehand made me able to make a structured treatment and shot plan for my video. Creating a treatment really helped my concept development. By creating a treatment plan for my video made me release I wanted my original concept, highlighting the isolation of city life to changing into a mirroring moving portrait concept instead. My original idea was to focus on the mental health and isolation a person can feel when living in a city, the original message behind the video was even though a person can be surrounded by people and busy life, it’s still easy to feel isolated. I changed my original idea because I was struggling to get the right message across to the audience without making it too obvious or too stubble. After a lot of consideration I decided to have a different approach to my music video. My actual concept for my video ended up focusing on mirroring moving portraits. This concept of mirroring came about from reviewing my existing footage and making a link between my footage and my song choice midnights mirror.

Having a well structured shot plan was a vital part of creating the moving portrait effect I wanted. I used two separate models for the shoots, each having separate shot plans. The footage was shot over different days so this meant the weather was drastically different on both days of filming. I made the decision to make the video black and white because, the colour correcting was taking up too much of my time, and as a first time film maker this colouring job became very complex, so by putting the my video in black and white made it much easier to colour correct. I like the effect the black and white has on the video, it gives the video a vintage quality which I found visually appealing. If I was to change anything about the filming process it would be to invest in a gimbal. Due to the equipment at photography department all being booked out, I was unable to get a gimbal on the days of filming so this meant I had to do the whole thing hand held. I got quite a lot of camera shake but luckily I managed to stabilise most of the footage in premiere pro. Overall I have really enjoyed this unit. Film making is something I had never done before so I enjoyed trying something new. I will definitely be using more video in the future. I am happy with the way my music video turned out, although if I could go back and change something it would be my use of a gimbal.

Project development

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Year 2

This week I have started my editing process. I used premiere pro to assemble and edit my videos. Before I started editing my final piece I made sure I practiced on some experimental videos I created in workshops. I found practicing on other videos useful to my development on premiere pro as I was more able to achieve the look I wanted on my final piece. After reviewing the footage I took from all of my shoots, I released that the colours in the videos were really varied, this was done to the changing weather conditions on the different days I shot the videos. Because of the drastic difference in colour fro every single frame, I made the decision to make the video black and white.

By putting my video in black and white I was more able to control the consistent colour gradient in each of the videos. The black and white effect gave my video a vintage feel that I really liked. I was pleased with my desion to put the video in black and white as o really liked the 60’s vibe the video gave. After having a tutorial with Jason I decide my video needed some transitions as the sharp cuts worked for some parts of the video but not so much on others. I made the choice to use effects such as; dip to black and film fade to merge two clips together. By adding some transitions the video now looks a lot smoother. My initial idea was to base the video around mental health, in particular feeling isolated living in a town or city. After reviewing this idea I decided to alter my idea. I was struggling to get the message of isolation across without being too obvious or too stubble. I considered my idea and changed it to mirroring moving portraiture. The shots that I got for each of the model were similar due to the shot plan so the concept of mirroring went well with the footage I gained. Overall my editing experience as been a good one, I feel confident that I can use premiere pro to a good ability. Screenshot 2020-01-13 at 12.38.56

Alexander McQueen autumn/winter 2016

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Year 2

This is a Fashion film produced in 2016 promoting Alexander Mcqueen’s  autumn/winter clothing collection. The film is based in the highlands of Scotland and features female models of all ages. This fashion promotion film particularly stuck out to me because I loved the use of the outdoors, the film isn’t just promoting the clothing its promoting the rural surrounds. It makes the viewers not only fall in love with the clothes but fall in love with the Scottish highlands. This film became an important part of research for my own film because I wanted to also shoot my video using the outside environment, the way this film promotes the environment is something I would like to achieve in my own film.

The use of black and white really brings out the expressions and the environment around the models. The use of camera angles immerse the audience into this video, it makes you feel as if you are walking through the Scottish countryside alongside the models. This video highlights the importance of using a good location. As I plan to use outside locations for my own video, I will be sure to visit the site I plan to film to make sure its the right fit for my video. The importance of a good choice of clothing is also brought up in this video. Finding an outfit that complements the surrounds is very important. For my rural shoot I plan to use some material that is able to move in the wind, this will highlight the outside environment in my video.

Andy Warhol- Screen Test

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Year 2

Andy Warhol is one of the creative industry’s most well-know creative minds. Best known for his paintings and screen prints, Warhol also is known for his film work. Warhol produced many videos but the one I am taking inspiration the most is his screen test series of screen test videos filmed between 1964 and 1966. One of my favourite screen tests from the collection is screen test three featuring Edie Sedgwick. The screen test would involve the sitter sitting in front of a camera for a long period of time  while Warhol would simply keep the camera rolling. Even though the idea is simple, the slight expressions on the sitters faces change during the duration of the video. As an audience we are taken through a journey of the sitters emotions; confidence soon turns to awkwardness and anxiety and then back again.

This idea of a moving portrait really inspired me in my own video. After seeing the Screen test’s by Warhol it made me want to create something similar. I loved the idea of the audience not knowing whether the work in question was a still or moving image. Warhol’s screen test’s were probably the main source of inspiration for my own moving image piece. I loved the whole concept behind the videos and is definitely something that resonated with me while planning out my own video. I knew I wanted my moving image piece to be based around portraits, but as soon as I saw Warhol’s screen tests I knew I wanted to base my project around moving portraits. This simplistic idea is easy to recreate and yet has such an effective outcome on audiences.

Someone Purer- Mystery Jets

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Year 2

As I am using Mystery Jets as the music for my own video I wanted to look at some examples of their previous music videos. Someone Purer directed by Jack King was featured in the bands Radlands album in 2012. The music video has some great examples of moving portraits especially in the first half of the video. The beginning of the video features a family sitting around a dinning table, the close up lingering shots of the actors facial expression helps portray the meaning of the song. Jack King is a self taught director who started his career by making music videos. King’s success was soon picked up on and he now directs many music videos for universal and independent record labels. I was particularly drawn to this music video because of its use of moving portrait in the start of the video.

The Mystery Jets someone purer video is one I took inspiration from the most when producing my own video featuring the Mystery Jets song Midnights Mirror. I wanted to pick a video that didn’t have an existing music video, this was because I wanted to create something that hasn’t been attempted before. The Someone Purer video served as good inspiration as the video is so well executed. I love the consistency of great lighting throughout the whole video, the lighting changes from day to night but still remains consistently good. I love how each shot in this video is well thought about, the video has clearly had a clear treatment plan and theme. The video highlights the importance of considering each individual shot as if it were a photograph. King’s video is a great example to take inspiration from for my own Mystery Jets music video.

Second Shoot

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Moving Image Test shoots, Year 2

This is the results from my second shoot. This shoot was conducted in a rural location opposed to the city location I used fro my previous shoot. I made the decision to put the images in black and white because of the different variations in lighting on the separate days I shot the videos. These photographs below are stills from some of the videos I captured. Overall I was happy with the out come of this shoot. The second shoot went smoother then my first attempt at shooting, as I felt more confident with using the video settings on my camera during this shoot. If I could go back and change anything I would use a gimbal to produce steadier videos. I was unable to access a gimbal for this shoot as they were all booked out during the period of time I shot this video.

Before I shot the video I had the music in mind that I wanted to use for the video. By picking the music first, made it easier for me to create the video effects I wanted. All the shots I had in mind were previously put together in a treatment plan. The treatment plan allowed me to plan out 5 to 10 second intervals of video, this made it easier to keep to my original plan, and made the whole shooting  more organised.

Premiere Pro workshop

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Moving Image Test shoots, Year 2

Premiere pro is the main program I am going to be using during this moving image project. I have never used this program before, so getting to use premiere pro before I started editing my own videos was useful. After some practice I found the program easy to use. I was taught how to create a basic video structure and to make small editorial changes to the video. During the workshop I produced this video including some of my own footage as well as footage from the shared area in the university folder. Producing this video was good practice, it gave me an understanding of the program and how to use  the tools that I need to create a video.

Since this workshop I have been using this program on a daily basis, creating a number of test videos and practicing the program before I start to create my own moving image piece. Overall I find premiere pro easy to use, after time spend practicing the program I now feel confident that I can produce a well executed video for my final piece.

Audio Workshop

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Moving Image Test shoots, Year 2

This workshop was about creating audio for videos. I got to use the university’s recording studio to create sounds for a Charlie chapman video. I was introduced to recording equipment that could capture 360 degrees of sound. This equipment would be useful when conducting and interview with a subject for a video or capturing various audio for a moving image piece. Once my group was happy with the sounds we have created, we then went into the recording studio to complete the recording for the video. We used certain objects such as water bottles and ID cards to recreate the sound in the video.

We then exported the recorded results to premiere pro. Using this program I managed to match the sounds to the Charlie chapman video. I am not happy with the results my group created as a lot of the sound we created were out of time and therefore hard for me to edit on premiere pro. If I were to redo this task I would defiantly take a copy of the video into the recording studio so I known what sound goes where. Overall I enjoyed this workshop, it was a useful skill to obtain and one I will most probably use in the future.

Project Development

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Year 2

After talking to Jason about my project, I have decided the next time I shoot I am going to focus on getting more close up portrait shots. This isolates the model from the rest of the scene and emphasises my theme of feeling isolated in a public place. I am also going to try and get the model in the frame but not in the centre of attention. I filmed a lot of shots of the model walking, tracking her movement, Jason suggested I cut some of these shots out as the audience could think that she is walking to meet someone.

For my Next shoot I am definitely going to focus on getting the close up portraits of the model, really showing her emotion to the audience to feel her sense of isolation. I am also going to play around with having the model in the scene but not in a immediately obvious place, this will gives the effect of people moving on but the model being isolated in the scene. Rochester Christmas market is coming up so this will be a good location to shoot. To have everyone in high spirits compared to my model will be a good opportunity to get some good shooting results.
