Exhibition Layout

Exhibition- Individual Work, Exposure, Year 2

For the Emergence exhibition in Nucleus Arts, I will be displaying my story telling moving image piece. I will displaying my moving image piece on a monitor, alongside my zine that talks about my moving image work in detail. Both my Monitor and my zine will be placed on a white plinth, the monitor placed on top of the plinth and my zine placed on a shelf that has been drilled into the plinth.

My work is going to displayed on the far back wall of the room. In this part of the room I have access to plug sockets, so I am able to play my moving image piece without having wires all over the exhibit. It was important that everyone showing moving image pieces had access to plug sockets, otherwise the wires would become a health and safety hazard. I had a total of 47 inches to exhibit my final piece. This ended up being plenty of room as my piece is not connected to the wall.

I am happy with the placement and amount of space I received in the exhibition. The exhibition design team have done a good job in placing everyone in the exhibition, they have ensured that everyone has an equal amount of space, and they have catered to everyone’s exhibition needs.

Ideal Way to Exhibit

Exhibition- Individual Work, Exposure, Year 2

For the Exposure unit I am planning on exhibiting my storytelling final piece. The piece is a short documentary about professional dressage rider Chelsea Tolhurst. In an ideal situation were space and money were not an option, I would like my moving image piece to be shown in a cinema style. The viewers would be directed into a separate room within the gallery. This room would have seating pointing towards a screen were the film would be projected. The room would be dark and have no other light source except from the projection on the screen. The moving image piece would play on a loop so that people were able to come to watch the piece at all times.

The space would have no more than twenty seats, I want the film to have an intimate and personal feel. I think that more than twenty people in the space at one time would be a distraction to the piece. On the way out of the exhibit there would be room containing a number of zines talking in more detail about the subject and myself the photographer. These zines would be free for the public to take. My artist statement would also be amongst the zines. Having this set up in a gallery would be an effective use of the space, it would showcase my work and allow views to really connect with the piece.

Exposure Review

Exposure, Reflective Review, Year 2

Group Work

Overall this exposure unit has been a good opportunity to work within a group. I enjoyed  partaking in group meetings and discussing peoples ideas in terms of the exhibition. I feel it was a possitive experience to work with my peers to create an exhibition. Even though the exhibition did not go ahead, I feel that it would have been a successful exhibition. As a team I though we worked well, each of us put in a lot of hard work to ensure that the exhibition wouldn’t have been a success. We arranged weekly group meetings to discuss ideas as well as frequent zoom meetings to insure we were all on track with group tasks. overall working in a group has been a positive experience, working in groups is an important thing when working in a creative industry. Collaborations are undoubtedly something that I will use in the future, so this unit was a great opportunity to practice working with other creatives.

Exhibition

Even though the exhibition at Nucleus Arts did not go ahead I am confident that it would have been a success. My personal layout for the exhibition consisted of a monitor, a plinth and a shelf attached to the plinth. This particular layout would not have taken up much room in the exhibition, I wanted my layout to be clean and minimalistic so my piece of moving image work would be central focus of my exhibit. It was important to me that my work was exhibited in a clean and uncluttered way, allowing the viewer to have an undisturbed view of work. The overall layout of exhibition in my opinion would have been a really effective use of the space. Even though the space at Nucleus Arts was small I believe to use of banners would have split up the space really nicely.

Major Project Proposal

I am really looking forward to starting my major project. My current idea (using music as portrait inspiration) is a really exciting idea to me. This idea makes the most sense to me currently, the project is something that has taken a lot of thought to come up with and is something that really interests me as a creative. Even if I don’t use this idea for my final major project it is definitely a project I will take part in outside of uni.

Evaluation

Story Telling, Story Telling Research, Year 2

For this unit I was asked to produce a piece of work that tells a story. In response to this brief I made a short documentary called aspirations and goals featuring  professional dressage rider Chelsea Tolhurst. I wanted to make a piece of work that highlighted individuals following a different career path. My aim was to capture all the hard work and dedication a person has to put in, to become successful in a career that differs from the norm. Before making the documentary on Chelsea, I completed a series of test shots following the hard work of semi professional boxer Ben Reed. I wanted to make this test film, so I had a practice run directing and filming  (as I’m relatively new to film making). Shooting the first shoot with Ben gave me a clear idea on what went well and things that I needed to improve on.

I wanted to make sure I got the results I was looking for before I when to Buckinghamshire to stay with Chelsea for a week whilst I filmed at her work. I wanted to give myself plenty of time to shoot and re-shoot if I needed to, so I decided to live on the yard for a week to get as much footage as I could. After conducting interviews and shadowing the subject for the week I finally got the footage I needed. I brought most of the footage into premiere pro whilst in Buckinghamshire, I did this to make sure I had enough content. Editing the footage while I was on the yard was useful because it enabled me to re-shoot certain elements of the documentary. Overall I am happy with the end result, I am confident that this story telling film piece is an improvement on my last moving image work from the previous unit.

I believe I have taken on board the feedback from the last unit and made the improvements needed to produce a stronger moving image piece. If I could go back and improve anything from my story telling final piece, I would have liked to make the documentary longer. Although the piece is over four minutes, had I known there would have been an extension on the duration of the project, I would have liked to stay with the subject for an extra couple of weeks. I would have liked to cover more topics such as; how the subjects family feel about Chelseas career choices, competitions and other employees on the yard.

In conclusion I am happy with the work I have produced for this unit. I really enjoyed making the body of work for this unit, I would as like to carry on documenting both subjects to follow their career paths. I believe my work shows a clear narrative and overall I am confident that this moving image piece is an improvement on my last.

Exhibition Plan

Exhibition- Individual Work, Exposure, Year 2

I am planing to show my story telling piece for the medway photo festival. My work will be shown in the Nucleus Arts Gallery, the gallery is situated just off Chatham high street. Nucleus had a professional gallery space feel, so is a perfect place to display my work. The space will be divided up between 22 people. That gives each person roughly 54inches of wall space. My piece consists a moving image piece and an zine. I want to show this particular piece of work because its a reflection of all the work I’ve produced this academic year. I want to exhibit my work using a plinth, on top of the I plan to use a monitor  which will play my video on a loop during the exhibition. My final piece also includes a zine. I want to display the zine next to my moving image piece so people in the gallery are able to make a clear connection between the zine and the moving image work.

I want to present my zine along side the monitor so I am planning to buy a simple clear plastic shelf that will be attached to the plinth using screws or super glue. This clear shelf will be a good way to present both pieces of my work together. My exhibition set up is relatively simple to execute. The only element of gallery resources I would need to use is a plug socket, the rest can be provided by the  university.

Zine

Story Telling, Year 2

This is the zine I have made as an addition to my moving image piece starring professional dressage rider Chelsea Tolhurst. I wanted to create this zine to show along side my moving image piece in the medway photo festival. The zine included’s further information about Chelsea’s life and line of work. I wanted to add a zine to the exhibition as I think it will be a good addition to my video. The zine offers more in depth information about the subject, so the audience are able to access more information about the subject. The zine includes; an interview from the subject, her everyday grooming tasks, her daily routine, competing and her plans for the future. I created the zine using InDesign, I plan to send the file off to be printed in time for the exhibition. I am happy with the way the zine turned out and I look forward to seeing the zine displayed next to my moving image piece in the Nucleus Arts Gallery.

Premier Pro- Editing the footage

Story Telling, Story Telling Test Shoots, Year 2

The next stage of my project was to go through all the footage I had captured during the time I spent with the subject. I gathered all of the footage and organised it using a number of bins. I split the footage up into days and different events I had captured. Organising the footage in this way helped me separate the good from the bad.

I wanted the piece to have a strong documentary feel to it, so I arranged the footage in a way that would engage the audience. The first thing I did was re watch my interview clips with the subject, I did this because I wanted to match the footage with what the subject was talking about. I found this to be an effective technique when putting my film together. By showing the footage of the subject doing the tasks she was talking about help the audience to gain an understanding of exactly what the subject is talking about.

Once I was happy with the order of the video, I then began working on music to go with my piece. Due to the work being shown in the medway photo festival I didn’t want to use music that had a copyright risk so I decided to make my own music for the piece. I wanted the piece to have an uplifting feel to it so I decided to create a piece of music that would create this atmosphere. After creating the music using my guitar and a loop pedal, I then converted the file to MP4 to match the format of my video. After assembling the audio and the order of my video the last thing left to do was play around with transitions between cuts. When I was happy with the way the video flowed the last thing left was to export the video as an MP4 file so it would be compatible with the monitor it would be shown on for the exhibition.
