Premiere Pro workshop

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Moving Image Test shoots, Year 2

Premiere pro is the main program I am going to be using during this moving image project. I have never used this program before, so getting to use premiere pro before I started editing my own videos was useful. After some practice I found the program easy to use. I was taught how to create a basic video structure and to make small editorial changes to the video. During the workshop I produced this video including some of my own footage as well as footage from the shared area in the university folder. Producing this video was good practice, it gave me an understanding of the program and how to use  the tools that I need to create a video.

Since this workshop I have been using this program on a daily basis, creating a number of test videos and practicing the program before I start to create my own moving image piece. Overall I find premiere pro easy to use, after time spend practicing the program I now feel confident that I can produce a well executed video for my final piece.

 

 

Audio Workshop

This workshop was about creating audio for videos. I got to use the university’s recording studio to create sounds for a Charlie chapman video. I was introduced to recording equipment that could capture 360 degrees of sound. This equipment would be useful when conducting and interview with a subject for a video or capturing various audio for a moving image piece. Once my group was happy with the sounds we have created, we then went into the recording studio to complete the recording for the video. We used certain objects such as water bottles and ID cards to recreate the sound in the video.

We then exported the recorded results to premiere pro. Using this program I managed to match the sounds to the Charlie chapman video. I am not happy with the results my group created as a lot of the sound we created were out of time and therefore hard for me to edit on premiere pro. If I were to redo this task I would defiantly take a copy of the video into the recording studio so I known what sound goes where. Overall I enjoyed this workshop, it was a useful skill to obtain and one I will most probably use in the future.

Project Development

Moving Image, Moving Image research, Year 2

After talking to Jason about my project, I have decided the next time I shoot I am going to focus on getting more close up portrait shots. This isolates the model from the rest of the scene and emphasises my theme of feeling isolated in a public place. I am also going to try and get the model in the frame but not in the centre of attention. I filmed a lot of shots of the model walking, tracking her movement, Jason suggested I cut some of these shots out as the audience could think that she is walking to meet someone.

For my Next shoot I am definitely going to focus on getting the close up portraits of the model, really showing her emotion to the audience to feel her sense of isolation. I am also going to play around with having the model in the scene but not in a immediately obvious place, this will gives the effect of people moving on but the model being isolated in the scene. Rochester Christmas market is coming up so this will be a good location to shoot. To have everyone in high spirits compared to my model will be a good opportunity to get some good shooting results.

After Effects Workshop

This workshop was a follow up from our green screen workshop, I used the footage I gained from the black magic and green screen workshop and imported it into After Effects.  After effects is an Adobe software in which many professional editors and filmmakers use within the industry. I pulled my footage from the green screen into the program and began to edit. As I had never worked with this program before I wanted to do something relatively simple, so I chose to do a weather broadcast. I was taught how to manipulate the existing footage to make it into my chosen weather  broadcast.

I found using after effects quite a challenging program to use. I feel that I would need to use it a few more times to get to grips with all the settings and effects that can be achieved through this program. I enjoyed learning this program, even though I found it challenging. I was able to bring to life the supposedly dull footage from the black magic and brig out all the information through the use of after effects. Overall I enjoyed the workshop but found it challenging, I feel that if I were the practice the program I would feel its true benefit.

Choreography Workshop

Today I took part in a choreography workshop with model and film maker Yagamoto. Yagamoto has been in the Industry for 4 years and has worked on many different projects, Yagamoto came from an acting background so when he went into the modelling world he used method acting to portray feelings and emotions into his work. During his workshop he got the class to think about the way we pose models, how we can use the outfit in which the model is wearing to portray different emotions. This workshop was useful because it got me to think about how I can manipulate how a model looks by asking different physiological questions.

For example, I if I wanted my model to look sad I would ask them a trigging question such as when was the last time you cried? by asking the subject questions like this triggers genuine emotions within the model. Yagamoto made me consider how the outfit on the model would make them feel and certain poses that would emphasise  the how the model is feeling, for example if a model was wearing a jumper the subject would perhaps demonstrate a pose where they are closed in. Overall I enjoyed the workshop, ti was unlike any other workshop I have had so far. It was very useful to hear from a models perspective, I feel more confident in being able to engaged with a model and get the look I wanted to achieve.

Green Screen/black magic workshop

Today I got to work with the Black Magic camera, the black magic is a camera that only records video, it is often used to produce high end cinema. The Black Magic was relatively simple to use, by controlling just a few settings I was able to produce a really high quality film. The main aim for this workshop was to introduce the class on how to work with green screen. Green screens are often used to edit and alter films, from the weather to Hollywood blockbusters evidence of green screen can be found. Green screen provides editors with a blank canvas to manipulate the video or photograph however they want.

Whilst I was filming with the black magic, I noticed the colours on the camera’s screen were very dull and unrealistic to what the colours actually were. I later found out that the colours were so dull on the Black magic’s screen because the camera was processing all of the information it could to get the best picture quality. Film makers like using the Black magic so much because its simple to use and has great results. Personally I don’t think I will use this camera in my future work, this was because I found the camera to be perfect of a studio environment but not as a location shoot camera. The black magic only has 30 minutes  off battery life before it looses power, so unless I has access to electricity while I was on a shoot using this particular camera would be a challenge to work with.

Overall I enjoyed working with a green screen and the black magic, I am looking forward to next week as I’ve got a tutorial on how to use after affects to bring a green screen to life.

Stills From First Shoot

These are a selection for stills from my first shoot. For my first shoot I wanted to create a set of moving image portraits to which I could incorporate to music. I shot in Rochester as it was local to the model I was shooting. I wanted to use a relatively built up area with lots of people, but due to the time of day I did not get the ‘city’ like results I was hoping for. I am happy with myself for creating these shots as it was the first ever time I had worked with video. I wish to return to the Rochester at a different time to capture the busyness I wanted. Next time I would maybe even try a different location to get the busy city effect I want in my video. The film is about feeling isolated even though the character lives in a town and is surrounded by people all the time.

Styling workshop with Marianthi Hatzikidi

Today I had a workshop with Marianthi looking into to how to style models. I have not worked with styling before so this was the first time I’ve considered costume in my photographs. Marianthi asked the group to find costume references in films or tv shows that we connected with. For this I chose ‘This Is England 86’ the costume in this show is very British, in your face and unapologetic. The overall look is scruffy and pushes the boundaries of style and trend. I chose this particular costume in relation to my moving image piece because, my music video is very much about celebrating British music and the costume that goes with it. I felt that the costume in the ‘This is England’ is something I want to take inspiration from for my own video.

After selecting which look I wanted to recreate, using the props that was available to me I created a look that was inspired by the costume I chose. I used a pair of Adidas tracksuit bottoms paired with an adidas t-shirt, I combined this outfit with a bucket hat and long socks, tucked into the trouser legs. I had the idea of incorporating the other 90’s rave culture into my styling technique as it fit well with the ‘This is England’ theme. The items of clothing I chose worked well to create the vision I was hoping to create.

This workshop was useful to me because it gave me a better understanding of how the styling of a model can bring to life different moods and characters within the subject posing the outfit. The outfit helped me pose the model, I when for poses that complemented the outfit., bringing out the theme of the ‘This is England’ in the finished product. I also worked on a project creating a victorian look, for this I used vintage clothing and umbrella that I found in a box of props. This workshop made me consider how the clothes make the model feel and use those emotions to my advantage when I’m photographing them.

Sports Team- Beverly Rose

Sports Team’s music video for their song Beverly Rose was filmed by Kris Rimmer and produced by Tom Ashton. I wanted to use this video as an example for my own project because this video has some really good examples of camera techniques that I would like to use in my own video. The use of tracking shots following the band through the streets has a really effective outcome. It puts the audience in the head space of the artist being filmed, it engages the audience to connected with the artist and the music being played. The use of direct eye contact with camera is also seen through this music video. By looking at the camera directly the artist creates the illusion that they engaging with the audience member directly.

Kris Rimmer is known for working with up coming artists some of these include, Bloxx, Matt Maltease, wolf Alice and sports team. Working with upcoming artists often means relatively low budget productions. All of Rimmer’s productions could be produced on a low budget. Rimmer is a good artist to look at for my moving image piece because, he usually works to a low budget working with the resources he has available. Rimmer often uses outside environments to shoot his productions. By using public spaces cuts down the filming budget considerably. I am going to take inspiration from Rimmer by using public spaces to film my own production. Using a variation of camera angles is also an important factor in creating a successful video, as demonstrated in sports team’s beverly rose video, Rimmer makes use of the space and creates a series of clever of camera edits, making the most of the space available. The main lessons I have learn from Rimmer is to use my environment to my advantage and to experiment with camera angles to get he best results possible.
